Stan "The Man" Musial was one of the most loved figures in baseball history. An outfielder and first baseman, three-time recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award, he is generally regarded as the greatest left-handed hitter in the history of the National League.
Born in Donora, Pennsylvania, in 1920 in the shadows of the Monongahela Valley's steel mills, Stan Musial cannot remember a time when he did not play baseball. Musial signed with the St. Louis Cardinals before his senior year of high school. by the time he was 21, he had helped the Redbirds win the World Series.
Musial's impressive statistics over his 22 years in the major leagues - all of them spent with the Cardinals - prove his greatness as a hitter. He smashed an amazing 3,630 hits - the third-highest total in major league history - for a lifetime batting average of .331. He led the National League four times in hits, six times in slugging, eight times in doubles, and seven times in batting average.
Stan Musial was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1969. |
