Baseball's all-time greatest drawing card, George Herman ("Babe") Ruth was the game's premier home run hitter - and one of its best pitchers, too.
Born in 1895, Babe Ruth was a rowdy kid from baltimore, Maryland, who broke into the majors at age 19 as a starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, winning 65 games during the next three years.
It was Ruth's hitting, however, that captivated everyone. His 11 homers in 1918 earned him a share of the big league crown, and his 29 round-trippers the following season toppled the old mark.
Ruth became a full-time outfielder in 1920, when Boston sold him to the New York Yankees. That season he hit .376, slugged an eye-popping .847, and nearly doubled his own record by walloping 54 hime runs. He then put up monumental numbers year after year, including 1927, when he launched 60 homers. By the time he retired in 1935, "the Sultan of Swat" had connected for 714 home runs and owned a .342 lifetime batting average.
A terrifying sight at the plate and yet one of the most fun-loving men around, Babe Ruth was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936. |
