For more than a half century, blacks were barred from playing major league baseball. The practice finally changed in 1947, when a very special person, Jackie Robinson, was chosen to break the sport's color line.
When Robinson first took the field for Branch Rickey's Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, baseball's "greatest exxperiment" began: for the first time in modern organized ball, a black player took the field.
Robinson immediately proved that he could run, hit and field as well as any major leaguer. A daring base runner, he won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, captured the National League's Most Valuable Player Award two years later, and helped the Dodgers win six pennants in his 10 seasons. He hit .311 overall and set a career fielding mark for second basemen.
The pioneering Robinson is best remembered, however, for his competitive spirit and aggressive style of play. "He was the only player I ever saw," said fellow Hall-of-Famer Ralph Kiner, "who could completely turn a game around by himself."
Robinson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. |
